- The former Arsenal man feels Chelsea’s passes were an illusion of domination.
- Wenger says Tuchel’s men often got their final 3rd passes wrong.
- The 3 centre-backs were very defensive-minded in their passing, Wenger suggests.
“I thought Tuchel only had one resource [which is] an illusion of their domination — because most of the passes were sideways,” the former Arsenal boss told beIN SPORTS.
“And when they were in the final third and had to be incisive with their passes, they were always wrong.
“Many times [Timo] Werner’s final ball was not good, even Mount. The biggest part of their game was too sideways.
“That is down to the fact that the three centre-backs were more defensive-minded and have not really been that players [ball-playing type], you know.
“The verticality of their game was not good enough.”
Chelsea had over 70% possession against Southampton, attempting 727 passes.
Since his arrival in late January, Thomas Tuchel has played with a back 3 in order to add defensive stability to the side.
The German is known to switch formations as per the need of his side and could look to change things around soon.
