- The Argentinean is one of the contenders to win the 2019 Ballon d’Or.
- However, it isn’t a priority for him.
- Messi admits he would be more disappointed if Barca fail to win the Champions League this season.
Lionel Messi is one of the contenders to scoop the 2019 Ballon d’Or, the most prestigious individual award in world’s football. The candidates haven’t been listed yet, however, everything indicates Messi’s potential rivals would be Cristiano Ronaldo and Virgil van Dijk.
However, in his recent interview for RAC1, Messi gets his priorities sorted. He says he would rather win the 2019/2020 Champions League rather than this year’s Ballon d’Or.
When asked whether it would be a disappointment if he doesn’t win the 2019 Ballon d’Or, Messi fires a strong reply: “No, because for me individual awards are a nice recognition and it’s fun to get to live this with my kids who enjoy them more than me, but they were never a priority.”
He finishes up: “Disappointment would be another year of not winning the Champions League because it’s been a few years now of not winning it.”
It is true that Barcelona haven’t tasted European glory since 2015. They won their second Treble back then. The Catalans beat Juventus 3-1 in the Champions League final.
As for the individual awards, Messi has recently claimed FIFA The Best trophy. Moreover, his goal against Liverpool was named the 2018/2019 UCL Best Goal.
