- The deal will be made official in the coming hours.
- Barca will pay 7 million euros for the defensive midfielder.
- Fernandes is expected to become the future Sergio Busquets or Arturo Vidal.
Matheus Fernandes’s transfer to Barcelona is almost finalized, Brazilian news outlet UOL say.
The Catalans will pay around 7 million euros for the Palmeiras’s midfielder. The player will then be loaned to Celta de Vigo for the remainder of the season.
The official announcement should come in the next few hours.
Earlier on, Palmeiras reportedly rejected Barca’s €6m bid for the player.
Barcelona have supposedly scouted the 21-year-old for two years before making a formal enquiry.
Matheus Fernandes is a central midfielder. However, his solid defensive skills allow him to play as a defensive midfielder, which means that Fernandes will likely become Arturo Vidal or Sergio Busquets’s replacement when Barca complete his signing.
Fernandes has made 87 appearances for Palmeiras in three years. He featured as a central midfielder in 47 games and played 19 times as a defensive midfielder. His reported value is €3.5m, as per Transfermarkt.
