Contract situation
Leo Messi’s contract with Barcelona expires in July 2021 and he is going to be a free agent next summer if nothing changes. Moreover, the Argentine will be free to start talking to other clubs and discuss a future move already in January.
Barcelona’s plan
Presidential candidates Victor Font, Jordi Farre and Xavi Vilajoana have all said that extending Messi’s contract is going to be their top priority if elected. However, the elections at Barcelona are expected to take place on January 24 only, meaning that other clubs will have at least 24 days to talk directly to Leo.
Leo Messi’s plan
According to RAC1, Messi will make the decision on his future depending on who wins the presidential election. The new president will have to convince the 33-year-old with their sporting project.

There have been rumours that Paris Saint-Germain have already started negotiations with Barca’s captain but the player’s father has denied it.
British tabloid The Sun have reported that Manchester City will look to sign Messi at cut-price. They expect Leo to be available for something around £50m. However, this report isn’t a reliable one.
The most reliable information in this regard comes from The Telegraph, with the publication claiming that Man City will offer Messi a pre-contract in January.
