Barcelona were hoping for a reunion with Neymar for the summer but their ambitions seem to have taken a big hit with new developments.
Barcelona sold Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for a world record fee of 220 million euros in the summer of 2017. The Brazil international is doing a very good job in France, though he has not had much luck on the European front whereas his former recruits have struggled in replacing him despite investments of multimillion euros.
Following his departure, Barca spent 110 million euros on signing Ousmane Dembele from Borussia Dortmund, but the winger has had several injury issues and has flopped at the Camp Nou. Philippe Coutinho, who cost 142 million euros was signed just six months later, did not settle into the system and already has one foot out of the Camp Nou.
Since the last summer, the Blaugrana have begun pursuing Neymar for a second tenure at the club. For a while, it did seem that the move would fall into place with the forward boycotting training and even Thomas Tuchel as well as sporting director Leonardo confirming that he intended to leave the Parc des Princes.
However, nothing happened until the end of August and Neymar managed to regain form in France before reportedly deciding to stay on at least until the summer of this year. Barcelona are certainly going to reignite their interest in the former Santos winger this time out as well, but Neymar is planning on snubbing his former club, The Sun claims.
With two and a half years left on his contract, the Parisians are interested in offering a new deal to their talisman and Neymar himself seems interested in committing himself to the club where he now feels home and settled. While the past issues between the player and club seem to be a far way behind now, Champions League success will determine his future.
Where do you think Neymar’s future lies after the end of the 2019/20 campaign?
