Barcelona are exploring the possibility of signing two of the world’s finest players in their roles with hopes of having Messi to extend his deal.
Barcelona ran riot over Ferencvaros in their Champions League meeting, but the concession of another cheap goal raised questions about their defensive organization. In hindsight, the Catalans have suffered lately due to a crop of aged players and some younger signings are required to help in keeping consistency over the course of the campaign.
Lionel Messi has publicly displayed his resentment over the club’s horrific transfer dealings from the last few years and with his contract expiring in 2021, the Argentina international will only renew in the event of a proper rebuild. Mundo Deportivo has now reported that the club will sign two world-class players to keep the captain at bay.
One of the best midfielders in Paul Pogba has been established on the Barca radar. The Manchester United midfielder has apparently not been happy with how he expected the club to be since switching from Juventus and despite being close to a contract extension, he would consider other offers from across Europe.
Pogba would be a solid signing for Barcelona since he is simply the world’s best midfielder and can play in any position in the central areas of the pitch. The France international’s performances around his national teammates have consistently been amazing and so it is understandable that he underperforms for United, who have a subpar team.
Second, David Alaba is the name being discussed in the Barca offices. The Bayern Munich defender is yet to renew his contract with the Bundesliga giants and will be free to negotiate terms with other clubs from January. The Catalans as well as their arch-rivals in Real Madrid have always looked up to Alaba and find his proposition an interesting prospect.
Alaba would be another brilliant addition to the club’s roster, who has a lack of central defenders as well as left-backs. The Austrian is capable of playing as a full-back and in the heart of defence, which offers his side a lot of versatility. Jordi Alba is an ageing left-back at Barca and Junior Firpo has failed, while the centre-back role has always needed rebuilding.
