The Frenchman not using his space led to an argument at The Hawthorns.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got really frustrated with Bruno Fernandes at one point in the 1-1 draw against West Brom on Sunday.
According to sideline correspondent Brad Cox, the manager fumed at the Portuguese for occupying the space down the middle too frequently.
With the Norwegian urging Bruno to switch up and exploit the space on the right, the midfielder responded angrily: “But the space is there [down the middle].”
“That is Antho’s [Martial’s] space!”, Solskjaer yelled back furiously. But since the Frenchman wasn’t interested in occupying his space, Manchester United couldn’t get in the game.
To be clear, Solskjaer was talking about so-called ‘half-spaces’. Luke Shaw occupies the left wing so Martial needs to fill the left half-space with Bruno in the right half-space. If the Portuguese moves to the left, it gets too crowded.
