Chelsea’s squad numbers for the 2020/21 season have been confirmed.
After being the Premier League’s highest-spending club during the summer transfer window, plenty has changed when it comes to squad numbers at Stamford Bridge in the past couple of the months.
Head coach Frank Lampard was able to bolster his first-team squad in several key areas by bringing in Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Edouard Mendy.
Six of the seven major summer signings have been allocated their new squad numbers.
For Ziyech and Havertz to get their favoured no.22 and no.29 shirt numbers respectively, two Blues stars in Christian Pulisic and Fikayo Tomori agreed to changes.
The latter now wears no.14 and the USA international is Chelsea’s new no.10 which means the comparisons to Eden Hazard is likely to only get louder as the season progresses.
Werner had to wait for Pedro’s move to AS Roma before getting his hands on the no.11, while Ben Chilwell has taken no.21 as Marcos Alonso is currently in possession of his favoured no.3.
Thiago Silva getting the no.6 means forgotten midfielder Danny Drinkwater is without a squad number for the campaign.
The no.16 has been given to Mendy and he kept a clean sheet on his Premier League debut before international break – which ironically was on Kepa Arrizabalaga’s birthday.
One major squad number upgrade is for wonderkid Billy Gilmour as he’s swapped no.47 for no.23 which became vacant just minutes after Michy Batshuayi’s loan move to Crystal Palace was confirmed.
Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have temporarily vacated no.8 and no.12 respectively after sealing loan deals to Aston Villa and Fulham respectively.
Although, they should get those back if they are to return next summer.
