In his recent interview, Frenkie revealed he also had the chance to join PSG or Man City.
However, the 22-year-old joined Barca because of his sporting reasons.
De Jong says playing for the Catalans has always been his dream.
In his recent interview to El Periodico, Frenkie De Jong revealed that he could have joined Paris Saint-Germain or Manchester City if an offer from Barcelona hadn’t arrived. When asked about the reasons why he chose the La Liga club, the 22-year-old said:
“My dream has always been to play for Barca one day.
“The first time I heard about Barca’s interest was in 2018. It was better for us to stay in Ajax for another year. We thought it was not time to leave. Ajax didn’t want to sell me either.
“My agent called me to say: ‘Barcelona has been interested in you, let’s talk with it. Listening to something like that makes you proud and flattered. I imagine that for any player it is very special to hear that Barcelona wants to sign you.
“It was very clear that I should continue another year [at Ajax]. I had barely climbed into the first team, I was injured for three months and had not played many games with Ajax. I wanted to play, and do things and I thought it would be better to leave later.
“If I had come in 2018 it would have been different. People did not know me then. With Ajax we played the Champions League, we won the league and the cup, I gained more experience and I developed as a footballer. Waiting was a good idea.”
And finally, the Dutchman says he liked Barac’s project: “They told me that they saw me playing here, that they thought about this and that, then they really convinced me. I talked with my family and my agent and we chose Barca. Then my agent came here to negotiate.”
