Juan Carlos Unzue hails Leo for his ambitions and perfectionism.
Yet he admits that his demands could be too much for some of his teammates or even coaches to handle.
“Ambition – it’s what has kept Leo Messi going, and that brings moments of stress with it,” former Barcelona goalkeeper and assistant coach Juan Carlos Unzue told Marca.
He added: “He demands that he continues to be the best and as a consequence, he always wants the maximum from those around him.
“It doesn’t matter if this is team-mates, the coach, the physio or what, it produces great stress on some colleagues who aren’t able to shoulder it.”
Last month, Quique Setien caused quite a stir, saying Leo Messi was difficult to manage. Several other players and managers who used to work with the Argentine great denied this claim.
As for Juan Carlos Unzue, the 53-year-old briefly played for Barca in the later 80s and returned to the club as a goalkeeper coach under Frank Rijkaard and Pep Guardiola. He was Luis Enrique’s assistant between 2014 and 2017.
