- Barca have accepted a proposal to play in the European Super League, Josep Maria Bartomeu said in his farewell presser on Tuesday.
- Football’s world governing body ‘is not aware of any agreement’ for Barca to join the rumoured competition.
“Fifa is not aware of any agreement,” football’s world governing body said in their statement Wednesday after Josep Maria Bartomeu said in his farewell presser as a Barcelona president that the Catalans “have accepted a proposal to play in the European Super League“.
“As we already said last week, the topic of a so-called ‘European Super League’ comes up every now and then and Fifa has no wish to comment further on this since there are already well-established football institutional structures to deal with it.”
According to AS, the new NBA-esque 18-team competition which could potentially become an alternative to the Champions League has the backing of JP Morgan bank who are willing to fund its creation with a €5 billion credit.
Aside from Barca, the likes of Real Madrid, PSG, Inter, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool and Man United are also interested in joining the ESL.
