- Back when Koeman was appointed at Barca, Font said he would replace the Dutchman with Xavi if elected.
- The presidential candidate now claims that what he meant was that the club shouldn’t focus on short-term results.
- Font applauds the work Koeman has done with Pedri and Fati.
“Now more than ever you have to bet on the home-grown youngsters and Koeman is doing it well with Ansu Fati and Pedri. I made a mistake with such strong statements,” presidential candidate Victor Font has told Partidazo COPE. (h/t Diario Sport)
“What I wanted to stay was that we have gone for a long time working on a project and the moment has come to stop thinking only about short-term results.”
When Koeman was only appointed as Barcelona’s head coach, Font told El Larguero that the Dutchman won’t continue at the club even if he has a good 2020/21 season.
However, he later went back on his word, saying that it will be Xavi who decides what to do with Koeman. As a reminder, Font has Xavi as the cornerstone of his sporting project but not necessarily as the head coach of the first team. The 40-year-old could be appointed as a sporting director while keeping Koeman in charge.
