- Jos Bogers is surprised by the way De Jong has been playing, saying Frenkie was never a shy footballer.
- As a kid, De Jong used to play against older rivals and was always among the best.
- Bogers claims that Frenkie will hit his peak at 26 or 27 years of age.
“It surprises me that De Jong is probably feeling the pressure of being at a team like Barcelona. I’ve seen that he plays with a certain level of shyness. It’s really surprising because one of his virtues is that he always plays the same. He has never been a shy footballer,” Frenkie’s coach from back at Willem II, Jos Bogers, has told Cadena SER. “[As a kid] he was a small player but with fabulous technique. He was good on the ball, had a great vision of the game and played with children older than him. Despite facing 13-year-old boys, he was always one of the best.
“Currently, we see footballers of 20, 21 or 22 years old playing at the highest level, but for a midfielder, the best age is between 26 to 28 years old; it is when they mature and reach their best physical levels. I think we will see the best version of De Jong at 26 or 27 years old.”
Since moving to Barca, Frenkie has registered two goals and five assists in 52 matches. One of the reasons why the Dutchman hasn’t yet shown the best version of himself might have to do with the fact that he’s been used in various positions.
Although he prefers playing as a defensive midfielder, he coaches have had him play as a central midfielder, left midfielder and even at centre-back a few times.
