The future of Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona remains uncertain and it will be intriguing to see if he will end up joining Manchester United.
As per a report covered by The Daily Mail today (press image provided below), Barca are willing to agree a deal worth £70million for De Jong to join Man Utd.
The renowned UK source have mentioned that talks have been held and Ten Hag remains frustrated because the midfielder is reluctant to join a team that will not take part in the Champions League next season.
De Jong was influential for the Netherlands in the recent victory against Belgium (provided an assist) and stated (NOS via The Mail)
“I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders. In the national team I play differently compared to Barca. And I think this one fits me better”
At Ajax, the 25-year-old excelled in the No.6 role under the leadership of Erik ten Hag. Moreover, he has proved to be effective in the DM position for the Dutch national side as well.
Holding midfielders are usually the first players to receive the ball from the backline and the dilemma for De Jong is that at Barcelona, Sergio Busquets has been irreplaceable in the No.6 position for years. So, he has mainly played in the central midfield.
Man United do not have a specialist No.6 in their squad and Frenkie de Jong could benefit from the presence of Ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Let’s see if the new manager can convince the midfielder who does not want to play in the Europa League.
