Barcelona have today announced the signings of Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen as free agents.
We don’t yet know what are Xavi’s plans regarding the two players, does he see them as undisputed starters or rotational players. However, there are at least three different ways Barca could line up with them from the first minute.
Option 1: 4-3-3
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen – Dest, Araujo, Christensen, Alba – Busquets, Kessie, Pedri – Raphinha, Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
If the gaffer decides to continue with the same set-up next season, there is a way he can implement Christensen and Kessie into the squad.
The centre-back would fare well as a left centre-back, pairing up with Araujo. As for Kessie, he can be deployed as a central midfielder. Thanks to his physicality, he would serve as a safety cushion, allowing Busquets and Pedri to push further up.
Option 2: 3-5-2
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen – Kounde, Araujo, Christensen – Raphinha, Kessie, Busquets, Pedri, Alba – Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
There have been reports that Xavi considers switching to a formation with three at the back this season. This would fit Christensen perfectly as he’s made to play in such a set-up.
Kessie would have a similar role as in a 4-3-3 formation but perhaps with more defensive responsibilities as he would have to cover up for Raphinha.
Option 3: 4-2-2-3
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen – Kounde, Araujo, Christensen – Kessie, Busquets – Pedri, Gavi – Raphinha, Lewandowski, Ansu Fati.
This option would be perfect for all parties – Xavi (it’s his favourite formation), Christensen (playing in a system with three at the back) and Kessie (playing in a double pivot).
