Super agent Jorge Mendes is urging Real Madrid outcast to cut his ties with Los Blancos and sign for Manchester United this summer, according to one report.
Rodriguez has largely been phased out of the starting lineup at Real Madrid in recent times which has seen him linked with a move away to just about every top European club imaginable, but Manchester United are the latest to show interest in him. Apparently.
Mundo Deportivo report that Rodriguez has an offer to move to Old Trafford this summer, but is still not convinced by the move. Mendes, his agent, is still working on persuading the Colombian to take the offer and start afresh in Manchester.
However, at 29 and facing competition from the likes of Paul Pogba and new signing Bruno Fernandes, Rodriguez would likely join and play a role from the bench, similar to his current one with Real Madrid.
Considering United only bought Fernandes – who plays in the same position as the Colombian and has been the better player in recent times – in January for a reported initial fee of £47m, splashing the cash on a previous Galactico signing doesn’t seem very likely. Especially considering the money he’d cost to sit on the bench.
It’s not the first time the Red Devils have been linked with him, either. The story seems to have cropped up every summer for the last few seasons, as Real Madrid seem unable to find a suitable buyer for their unwanted man, who has made just eight La Liga appearances this season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen to bolster his attacking options, and while Rodriguez would do that, their current pursuit of Jadon Sancho seems like the only bit of big money spending United will do this summer. And while he’s been out of favour in Spain, Rodriguez probably still wouldn’t come that cheap.
Is this just another case of speculation for speculation’s sake? Who knows, but let’s just say United are probably more likely to sign Wesley Sneijder. And that’s saying something.
