“I voted for Leo Messi [in FIFA ‘The Best’] because I appreciate what he did in 2021 and, of course, before that. Messi talked about me at the Ballon d’Or gala. Why did his opinion about me change? I don’t know,” Robert Lewandowski has told Pilka Nozna.
“I don’t have any regrets or complaints. I accepted it. It was Messi’s decision and that’s that. I won the award anyway, so it was easier for me to accept it this way.”
At the Ballon d’Or gala in November, after receiving his seventh one, Messi said that Lewandowski too deserved to have one of those awards at home. However, Leo most likely meant that the Polish striker should have gotten the award for 2020.
That year, Robert won the treble with Bayern Munich, but the award was cancelled due to COVID-19.
As for Leo’s votes in FIFA The Best, the former Barcelona start put Neymar first, Kylian Mbappe second, and Karim Benzema third.
The Argentine usually puts his teammates and friends first and then goes for who he considers the best player for that year. It simply looks like he believes Benzema was better than Lewandowski in 2021.
