Manchester United have been urged to replace club captain Harry Maguire with Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt.
Harry has endured a woeful campaign, with his latest calamitous display on the show in Tuesday night’s lacklustre 1-1 draw at Burnley.
Harry was central to Varane’s early header being disallowed by VAR after blocking a defender in an offside position. Maguire was then at fault for the Clarets’ second-half equaliser, overcommitting in a challenge on Weghorst and allowing Jay Rodriguez to run in behind.
Many supporters have questioned why Harry has remained captain over the likes of Ronaldo and Bruno. And a former Man United footballer believes Ralf Rangnick shouldn’t even be starting him whilst he’s in his prolonged rut of form.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with the Netherlands international when Jose Mourinho was a coach at Theatre of Dreams, with the centre-back impressing at Ajax. But de Ligt joined the Bianconeri in a £68m deal in 2019, ending Man United’s hopes of signing the defender.
If Erik ten Hag becomes Man United’s manager this summer, though, Matthijs could be interested in moving to England. And it would all but end Harry’s stint as a regular starter, just three years after joining the club for £80m.
Kleberson has also called on Man United to target the Dutch defender to replace the Englishman permanently. “Manchester United need to make some signings at the centre back position to replace Maguire,” he explained.
