According to Marca journalist Jose Felix Diaz, Leo Messi will receive the 2019 Ballon d’Or from Luka Modric’s hands. The Real Madrid midfielder received the award last year after winning the Champions League with Los Blancos and reaching the 2018 World Cup final with Croatia.
In fact, Modric was the first player since Kaka in 2007 to win the award over Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Last year, Barca’s captain ended in 5th place in the Ballon d’Or standings with Modric, Ronaldo, Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappe all ranked above him.
If the recent rumours are to be believed, Messi is set to win his record-breaking sixth Ballon d’Or. Earlier this year, the forward was also presented with his sixth Golden Boot, which is also a world record.
Messi recently made his 700th appearance for Barcelona and celebrated it with a goal against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
Besides Leo Messi, four Blaugrana players have been nominated for the award, — Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Antoine Griezmann and Frenkie de Jong. You can check their position in the 2019 Ballon d’Or standings here.
