The Brazilian believes that stories like his and Leo’s are out of common.
“When your heart overflows with love, it is difficult to change your path. Like you, I know what it’s like to love wearing the same shirt every day. Like you, I know that there is nothing better than the place we feel at home,” Pele wrote on his Instagram as Leo Messi equalled his record for most goals scored for a single club.
“Congratulations on your historic record, Lionel. But above all, congratulations on your beautiful career at Barcelona. Stories like ours, of loving the same club for so long, unfortunately, will be increasingly rare in football. I admire you very much.”
The Argentine scored his 643rd goal for Barcelona in the Valencia draw, thus equalling Pele’s record for Santos.
Messi’s contract at the club expires in July 2021 and for now, it’s not clear whether he will continue at Camp Nou beyond next summer.
