The gaffer was shocked to see the Red Devils throw a 4-2 lead to draw 4-4 to Everton at Old Trafford in the 2011/12 season.
He lamented how the Red Devils conceded soft goals in that game, as they did in the recent 3-3 draw against Everton.
The last time Man United played a high-scoring thrilling draw at Old Trafford against Everton was in the 2011/12 season, when they threw away a 4-2 lead to be held 4-4 by David Moyes’ side in the Premier League.
When asked about whether he was shocked to see his side draw from a winning position, Sir Alex Ferguson said: “Well, we absolutely threw away the game. We just needed to see the game out there. It’s a travesty because some of our football was fantastic, the goals we scored were great goals.
“To give away 4 goals at Old Trafford in such an important game, we just can’t believe it.”
He was also asked about whether only defensive lapses caused that result, to which he said: “I think so. I think the goals were soft, really soft goals. We’ve created good goals from some really good football, they got their goals easy.
If Sir Alex was interviewed after watching United get held to a 3-3 draw by Everton on Saturday, he’d probably reflect the same words to sum up the result. The Red Devils scored some great goals but lapses in defence and silly mistakes gifted the visitors a point.
Incidentally, that draw in the 2011/12 season was also the one which effectively ended United’s Premier League dreams in that campaign. If Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s words are to be taken, the 3-3 draw on Saturday is perhaps the one that potentially rules us out of the title race this season as well.
