Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk are two top choices to win Ballon d’Or 2019 award which is going to be held in Paris on 2nd December. Reports in Spain suggest that Messi is on the verge of winning his sixth Ballon d’Or.
The Ballon d’Or is an award given by the French magazine since 1956 and is one of the biggest individual awards in modern football.
Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo has revealed that Lionel Messi has been voted as the winner of Ballon d’Or, ahead of the award ceremony in France, after his spectacular performance with Barcelona during the season.
The Argentine scored 51 goals in 50 appearances for Barcelona in 2018/19 and led the club to the La Liga title. If the reports are true then the 32-year old will move ahead of rival Cristiano Ronaldo, with both players currently having five Ballon d’Or awards to their names.
However, some football fans around the world may not like the Barcelona maestro winning the French award as defender Virgil van Dijk is also one of the favorites to win the award after defeating Messi’s Barca to go on and win the UEFA Champions League. He also won the PFA Premier League Player of the Year and UEFA Player of the year this season. The Dutch international was the much-needed concrete at the back for the Champions League winners, Liverpool.
The Argentine international has however been in his pinnacle form and even fellow nominee Kylian Mbappe has favored the Barca captain to win. The world cup winner told German publication Der Spiegel that Messi was the best player this year, ‘Messi. In individual terms, he was the best this year.”
