The transfer window is finally shut. Well, sort of.
Premier League clubs can still do deals with EFL sides until October 16, and there are also a few European countries that have later deadlines than the Premier League’s.
Chelsea have had one of the biggest transfer windows in Europe, harking back to the early Roman Abramovich days when cash was no obstacle.
Frank Lampard has forked out over £200million to bring Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Edouard Mendy and Hakim Ziyech to the club.
Given their big spending, Chelsea had hoped to raise a few funds before deadline day. But despite Monday’s cut-off, there is still time to finalise business.
Russia’s window closes on October 17, one day after the UK’s domestic window, while Portuguese clubs have until October 25. There’s a shorter timeframe in the Netherlands, with their window closing later today.
Emerson Palmieri
Emerson has been shunted down the pecking order after the arrival of Chilwell, and by all accounts Lampard was keen to get him out of Stamford Bridge this summer.
A move to Inter failed to materialise, while Juventus and AC Milan considered bringing the left-back to Serie A.
Emerson appears to have his heart set on Italy, but the defender could find game time in Portugal. Porto have just sold Alex Telles to Manchester United and may be on the hunt for a replacement left-back.
Marcos Alonso
Another left-back that Chelsea failed to ship off to Serie A. AC Milan ruled out a move for Alonso on deadline day, but he may yet depart before the month is out.
Again, Portugal could offer Alonso sanctuary. Porto might prefer him to Emerson, while Sporting CP and Benfica could also take a look.
Alonso’s better suited to a wing-back system, so that will be a consideration for any potential suitors.
Antonio Rudiger
Another defender, another exit that broke down on deadline day.
Rudiger was Chelsea’s number one centre-back two years ago, but he doesn’t appear to be in Lampard’s plans for the season ahead.
Moves to Tottenham and West Ham were mooted on deadline day, but nothing came to pass. Rudiger will want to be playing regularly ahead of next summer’s European Championship, so he would probably be open to a loan move overseas.
Ajax are currently throwing Daley Blind into the centre of defence alongside 19-year old Jurgen Timber, so the Dutch club might be interested in a more natural fit in that role.
Kepa Arrizabalaga
Chelsea’s signing of Mendy surely brings Kepa’s Chelsea career to an end, even if he remains on the books until January or next summer.
Lampard may well prefer Willy Caballero as his No.2, leaving no space in the matchday squad for the Spaniard.
It will be impossible for the Blues to recoup the £71.5m they paid for Kepa, but it might suit everyone for Chelsea to cut their losses and let him go.
