The Frenchman has returned to training after recovering from a hamstring issue.
The new boss is happy to have him in the new squad.
He does not see Kante as the deepest midfielder, though, but rather as a part of a double pivot.
“N’Golo Kante came back today,” Thomas Tuchel revealed at his first press conference as the Chelsea head coach.
“I think he is strongest in the double six, in the centre, in the heart of the game,” he added, talking about Kante’s best role on the pitch.
“It gives him a little bit more freedom than when he plays a single six, which demands a bit more discipline and maybe cuts his wings a little bit.
“For me, he is a double six because we can use his energy and use his range, his volume in his game. His ability to recuperate and recover balls everywhere on the pitch. He is a guy who is a big, big helper for everybody.
“He has the mentality of a helper, of a water carrier. But at the same time a world-class player who played a crucial role in the World Cup win for France. That is why it is super important to have him.”
N’Golo Kante has been sidelined with a hamstring injury since the Man City game at the start of this month. Thursday is the first day after he picked up this issue when he trained with the first-team squad.
In his absence, Tuchel picked Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic as the two central midfielders for the Wolves game. It’s unlikely that he’ll stick to this formation in the future, so it’s even more intriguing to see where N’Golo will be featuring in the coming weeks.
