The Uruguayan Academy of Letters says that the FA has made an error in banning Cavani for his comments.
The academy also makes it clear that the word ‘negrito’ was used for means of affection and was completely misinterpreted by the English board.
After Edinson Cavani received a 3-game ban for his ‘negrito’ comments on Instagram in November, the Uruguayan academy of letters responded and said: “The English Football Association has committed a serious injustice with the Uruguayan sportsman.
“And has made an error in ruling on the use of language, and in particular Spanish, without noting all its complexities and contexts,” the academy said in a statement.
“In the context that it was written, the only value that can be given to negrito – and particularly because of the diminutive use – is affectionately.”
The academy have also made it clear that words referring to skin colour, weight and other physical characteristics are often used among friends and family in Latin America.
Cavani has apologized for his post and made it clear that he meant no harm whatsoever. He will now miss the next two games for Man United against Man City in the Carabao Cup and FA Cup semi-final against Watford due to the ban.
