Perhaps Leo was right to complain about refereeing in South America.
Leo Messi scored a goal in the second half against Paraguay to make it 2-1 for Argentina. However, VAR denied ruled the goal off because of a foul (was it a foul though?) that happened half a minute earlier.
Many fans were frustrated by the decision as the Albiceleste didn’t score on a counter, they actually kept the ball for a while And the fouled Paraguay player got up and returned to his own half to help in defence. Still, the referee took the goal away.
When Messi’s goal was scored, there wasn’t a single player complaining from the opponent, nobody even remembered there could have been a possible foul 20 seconds earlier.
And that’s when VAR decides that they want to be relevant as well during a game.

Messi's goal is ruled off by VAR. Several passes before the goal for a foul. Still think VAR is ruining the game.

I don’t see any way that meets the standards set out for VAR. Messi goal erased by a bizarre decision.

Well that foul on Palacios deserved a red card and Paraguay's penalty should've been retaken because there was encroachment. VAR was sleeping.
But Messi's goal was ruled out for a foul 30 seconds earlier and when no Paraguay player complained. Ridiculous! 😡

Messi goal getting reviewed after miles away been tiptoed foul at half line.. Neither of Paraguay was complaining but VAR thought to review themselves. pic.twitter.com/VYE6RFHCtk

VAR didn’t felt like interfering here though.
Then people criticize messi for speaking out lmao. pic.twitter.com/o1hPGqJYPD— Dipanshu (@Dipanshu089) November 13, 2020
I can't believe what I just watch Messi goal was cancelled for a tackle that happened 2 mins before the goal was scored, is VAR suppose to still intervene after so many passes? 🤦♂️

Seems like VAR went all the way back to the 2018 World Cup to find that foul.

VAR really travelled back in time to find a foul to deny that Messi goal
