The Frenchman is undoubtedly talented – but so are some defenders who are already on the Blues’ books.
Dayot Upamecano is one of the names that are strongly linked with Chelsea as they appear to continue their search for their ideal centre-back.
However, Twitter user ExpectedChelsea maintains that the RB Leipzig defender is anything but ideal for the Blues. Here’s how the fan explains it:
“Not a fan of the Upamecano to Chelsea rumours. He’s a good player – the interest in him proves as much – but he’s not what we need right now.
“His ball-playing is phenomenal but he’s not the most rugged defender out there. We can do better – both from within the club and outside.
“Any CB transfer must be made with Guehi and to an extent, Tomori in mind. Both of them are ‘project’ CBs due to their inexperience, and so is Upamecano. Spending 40m on another ‘project’ CB makes little sense, especially when he’s very flawed. What we need is someone at their peak.
“Konate, Kounde, Upamecano, this applies to almost all of them. Each and every one of them is a terrific but raw talent but so is Guehi. He’s no less than them.
“We shouldn’t sign anyone who is going to block him, the new CB should be a mentor for him instead.”
Chelsea already have a couple of more experienced centre-backs, but Thiago Silva is already in the twilight of his career and Antonio Rudiger can be error-prone even on a good day.
