After winning the 2022 World Cup, Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni was asked whether his star player Lionel Messi will also be there in 2026 for the World Cup.
“For now, I think we should reserve him a place for the next World Cup. If you can call up 26 players…” Scaloni told TyC Sports.
“We can save the no.10 jersey for him if he wants to continue playing. I think he has won the right to decide what he wants to do with his footballing career and with Argentina.
“There’s nothing left for him to prove, if you even think he had anything to prove because I do not. The truth is that it’s a pleasure to be training him and his teammates.”
Messi has confirmed that he will not retire from the national team for now. He will be 39 by the time the World Cup in North America kicks off, so it remains to be seen if he will even be playing at that time.
