Victor Font sees Xavi as Barca’s next head coach if he wins the upcoming presidential election.
The current Al Sadd manager, however, appears to be in no hurry to leave Qatar before the end of the 2022 World Cup.
Despite many expecting Xavi Hernandez to take over at Barcelona next summer, the Blaugrana legend is ‘happy’ to stay at Al Sadd until the end of the next World Cup that will take place in Qatar in 2022.
“I moved to Qatar to join Al Sadd to prolong my career as a player. We moved from Barcelona, my native city and the club I love so much, to start again in a new part of the world. It was a good decision for me and my family,” the 40-year-old wrote in an open letter to celebrate the National Day of Qatar, as quoted by Marca.
“At that moment, my passion for playing was as strong as ever but in the background, I knew I couldn’t add as much as I would have wanted at a club like Barca, where you have to win every game.
“When I learned about the World Cup project in Qatar, speaking with friends like Raul, who had played here, I was impressed by what the country wanted to achieve on and off the pitch to organise the World Cup.
“It was a great chance for me to keep playing football and be part of a bigger project at the same time, with the objective of achieving big things on the pitch through the implemented programs to make a positive social change beyond 2022.
“With the current rhythm of development and having recently won the Asian Cup, I think Qatar can compete well in their first World Cup in 2022. The football culture is growing at a tremendous speed here and I think the World Cup will help take it to the next level, not just in Qatar, but in the Arab world.
“One day, the moment will arrive to take the next step in my career, but now I am happy to enjoy my team here and take advantage of the chance to play a small role in the exciting journey towards Qatar 2022.”
Barca’s presidential candidate Victor Font remains the biggest fan of Xavi’s appointment in the Camp Nou dugout.
Now it looks like the club’s legend is unlikely to return to Barcelona even if Font wins the upcoming election.
