- Leo has won his sixth The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, setting a new record.
- Cristiano was also among the nominees but snubbed the ceremony.
- Soon afterwards, the Portuguese published a weird post on his Instagram.
Leo Messi has set a new record by winning his sixth The Best FIFA Men’s Player award. His arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award on five occasions, was also among the nominees but decided to stay at home. After the Argentine had been announced as the winner, the 34-year-old reacted with a weird post on his Instagram account:
“Patience and persistence are two characteristics that differentiate the professional from the amateur. Everything that is big today has started small. You can’t do everything but do everything you can to make your dreams come true. And keep in mind that after night always comes dawn,” wrote the ex-Real Madrid man.
Ronaldo’s photo accompanying the post:
There’s another funny story! It seems like the Portuguese Football Asociation expected the Juventus player to win the award and had prepared a picture to congratulate the forward. The picture clearly had the words ‘The Best’ on it, just like the name of the award.

However, it seems they had to change the picture adding the word ‘ever’ to it as soon as FIFA announced Messi as the winner.
Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk was also nominated to the award. Curiously, this trio were also battling for the UEFA Player of the Year award back in August. It was Liverpool’s defender who claimed the prize.
