OpenAI commits $5 million to the American Journalism Project (AJP) as a step that supports local news through the application of artificial intelligence (AI).
The partnership aims to explore various avenues where AI can contribute to the revitalization of local news, with OpenAI’s support playing a crucial role.
In addition to the monetary investment, the partnership grants the AJP and its affiliated organizations up to $5 million in OpenAI credits specifically allocated for the utilization of ChatGPT technology. ChatGPT is a Microsoft-backed startup that has gained popularity due to its advanced conversational abilities, making it an ideal tool for enhancing journalism through AI.
OpenAI supports local news with it’s collaboration with media organizations extends beyond the AJP. Just last week, the company forged an agreement with the Associated Press (AP), a renowned news publisher, to license a portion of AP’s vast archive of stories. This collaboration aims to explore the potential of generative AI in the news industry.

The funds allocated to the AJP will contribute to the establishment of a studio that allows local news outlets to experiment with OpenAI’s technology. This studio will serve as a testing ground, enabling news organizations to explore and harness the power of AI in their reporting. Additionally, the AJP plans to distribute grants to approximately 10 of its portfolio organizations. These grants will support pilot projects and experiments focused on integrating AI applications into their operations.

Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP, emphasizes the partnership’s objective of leveraging AI to enhance journalism rather than posing a threat to its integrity. By fostering collaboration between AI technology and journalism, the aim is to find innovative ways to sustain local news organizations and address the ongoing local news crisis in the United States.
As a venture philanthropy organization, the AJP has successfully raised $139 million from both local and national funders to tackle the challenges faced by local nonprofit news organizations. This funding has enabled the AJP to support 41 nonprofit local news organizations across the country, providing vital resources to ensure the continuation of their newsrooms and journalism endeavors.
