Quebecor to remove ads following Meta Platforms’ (META.O) decision to restrict access to news on both Facebook and Instagram in Canada due to a law requiring payments to local news publishers, telecom and media company, Quebecor announced on Wednesday that it will remove its advertisements from both platforms.
businesses like Meta and Alphabet-owned (GOOGL.O) Google would be required to negotiate commercial partnerships and pay news publishers for their content if the “Online News Act,” also known as House of Commons bill C-18, which was filed in April of last year lays out the procedures that will oblige these businesses to do so.
Quebecor to remove ads as both Google and Meta have stated in the past that they would restrict access to news stories within Canada in the event that the legislation was implemented.

A request for a comment on the amount of money that Quebecor invests in adverts on Facebook and Instagram was not immediately met with a response from the company. Quebecor is a media conglomerate that also owns news organizations and newspapers.
A request for comment was sent to Meta; however, we did not receive an instant response.
