“This is another step in that direction with the new Jio Bharat phone. The Jio Bharat is not the first low-cost phone that Reliance has made. Over the years, the Indian company has put out a number of cheap phones. Late in 2021, the company showed off its first smartphone, which was called JioPhone Next. The project was a big partnership with Google, which powered the device with a “extremely optimised” version of its Android mobile operating system.
Sundar Pichai said in 2021, “The JioPhone Next is an affordable smartphone made for India. It was inspired by the idea that everyone in India should be able to take advantage of the opportunities the internet creates.”
But the fact that the JioPhone Next cost $80 made it harder for more people to buy it.
